Our Story

Our Story

Our story began in 1927 with a "Mystery Window Night" in downtown Lyons, Kansas. The Window, was a local town booster event and displayed Indian relics collected in Rice county. Paul and Horace Jones were brothers and editors of the local newspaper and avid collectors since childhood. After the positive public reaction, the brothers invited others to join in the search and to contribute their own artifacts for a county museum.

Discovering the

connection of the Rice county artifacts to the Coronado route provided the support to explore the theory that Rice county was the fabled Quivira sought by explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado.

Ground breaking for museum.
