Sante Fe Trail

Santa Fe Trail

In 1821, William Becknell and five other men launched out from Missouri toward Santa Fe with three wagons which were the first to arrive in Santa Fe. Thousanda of traders and wagons followed in the next six decades. The wagon trains ranged from 10 to over 100 and the most popular wagons were the Conestoga. Mules and oxen were used to pull the wagons. Some popular items hauled in wagons were cotton cloth, playing cards, and parasols. The Santa Fe Trail was a trail dominated by commerce.
